En esencia, es una enfermedad inflamatoria que afecta a los tejidos que se encuentran alrededor del diente, haciendo que si no se diagnostica y trata a tiempo, puede provocar la pérdida del diente en cuestión y, en algunos casos, tener consecuencias en la salud general de la persona que la padece. Conviene distinguir, dependiendo de si la afectación es más superficial o más profunda, la gingivitis de la periodontitis propiamente dicha. La primera es una inflamación superficial de la encía y uno de los síntomas más fáciles de detectar es el sangrado que se produce y si no se trata correctamente, puede convertirse en una periodontitis que es una infección más profunda en la encía, provocando que se despegue del diente y se formen las llamadas bolsas periodontales. Por esta afección, el hueso que sujeta al diente se pierde.
El tratamiento de estas dos enfermedades de las encías debe ser lo más pronto posible, lo cual no es fácil en muchos casos porque evolucionan por ellas sin provocar dolor y en silencio, apareciendo los primeros síntomas de dolor cuando ya se encuentran en un estado muy avanzado.
Las enfermedades periodontales se producen debido a la actuación de las bacterias que viven en la boca. Estas se van depositando sobre los dientes y encías y si no se realiza correctamente y con regularidad la higiene bucal, estas van creciendo y acumulando en los espacios existentes entre los dientes provocando la aparición de estas afecciones. Para no agravar los efectos de las bacterias conviene evitar el consumo de tabaco, sufrir estrés y enfermedades sistémicas como la diabetes y tener cuidado con los cambios hormonales que se producen durante el periodo del embarazo o con la llegada de la menopausia.
