El bicarbonato de sodio tiene diversos usos domésticos, pero también se utiliza como limpiador y blanqueador de dientes. Existen muchas teorías y controversias con este tema. Hoy en YBdent intentaremos resolver las diferentes dudas sobre este tema.
Sí, el bicarbonato blanquea los dientes, pero también puede acabar dañando la dentadura. Para comenzar, los dientes NO son blancos, es una idea errónea bastante popularizada. El esmalte dental realmente es traslúcido, lo que define el color de cada dentadura es la dentina, el tejido dental que se encuentra debajo del esmalte.
La dentina suele tener un color amarillento, este es el tono de nuestros dientes. También puede oscurecerse debido a los malos hábitos de los consumidores como puede ser fumar, beber vino, tomar café, ciertos alimentos, etc… Aquí es donde el bicarbonato de sodio podría sernos útil.
Las bacterias requieren condiciones ácidas para sobrevivir y actuar en tu boca. Para hacer nuestra boca menos ácida, habría que aumentar el pH enjuagando con bicarbonato y agua.
Las biopelículas son colonias de bacterias que se adhieren a la superficie de los dientes y pueden causar gingivitis y caries. Cuando te cepillas los dientes con bicarbonato de sodio se interrumpe esa biopelícula, lo cual reduce las bacterias y previene daños en los dientes y encías.
El bicarbonato de sodio tiene propiedades blanqueadoras y es eficaz para eliminar manchas de los dientes. Por esto es uno de los ingredientes de muchas pastas de dientes comerciales.
Además de no tener un buen sabor, su textura puede hacer sentir como si se tuviera arena en la boca.
El bicarbonato es un abrasivo suave y es posible que no elimine manchas con la misma eficacia que otros productos.
Utilizar bicarbonato de sodio como única pasta de dientes no proporciona flúor que está presente en muchas pastas de dientes comerciales. En el apartado anterior te hablamos de sus ventajas, desventajas y sobre la baja abrasividad del bicarbonato de sodio y de cómo éste por sí solo, en pequeñas concentraciones, resulta inofensivo.
Te recomendamos que nunca hagas esto, cuando lo mezclamos con otros ingredientes para “aumentar el efecto blanqueador” estamos cometiendo un gran error.
Mejor que nadie entendemos las ganas de tener una sonrisa brillante, blanca y perfecta. Pero el bicarbonato de sodio puede resultar abrasivo para el esmalte dental, la dentina y dañar el esmalte que protege nuestros dientes.
