Son muchas las personas que tienen miedo de ir al dentista y experimentan en esos momentos (antes o después de tener que acudir al dentista) la sensación de estrés y nerviosismo. Este fenómeno es llamado odontofobia, es decir, miedo de ir al dentista.
Actualmente, el miedo de ir al dentista afecta al 15% de la población. Por suerte, muchos de ellos anteponen su salud bucodental antes que su miedo a ir al dentista. Sin embargo, siguen habiendo personas que con solo pensarlo experimentan ataque de pánico y esto les complica mucho acudir a su clínica dental.

Ten en cuenta que la primera visita es como una revisión y esta intervención no te hará nada de daño. Así que puedes ir tranquila/o porque no te harán nada de lo que te puedas asustar.
Que tu dentista te vaya hablando de todo lo que está haciendo, y que está utilizando en cada momento te dará más confianza, y por lo tanto tu ansiedad por el miedo al dentista debería de reducirse.
Si el dolor es lo que más miedo te da del dentista, tranquilo/a y pídele a tu dentista que te lo explique todo poco a poco.
Es mejor que cuanto antes sea la cita mejor y si puede ser escoge la primera hora de la mañana. Esto evitará que estés más tiempo dándole vueltas y sintiendo ese miedo al dentista acelerado.
Esta es una buena manera para evitar los movimientos bruscos. Además, el dentista sabrá que tiene que parar y darte un descanso.
En estos momentos intenta entretenerte con cualquier cosa, ya sea con el móvil, con un libro o ven acompañado y habla de otros temas (que no sean sobre el dentista) en ese momento.
Si en cambio te pones a pensar en que va a pasar o si te va a doler tu miedo al dentista va a ir en aumento en cada segundo. Así que tranquilízate y entretente con cualquier cosa.
Cada vez que pienses en el miedo que tienes de ir al dentista utiliza técnicas que te hagan estar más relajado/a y que te hagan dejar de pensar en ello. Utiliza estas técnicas también en la sala de espera, ya que te ayudarán a controlar tus nervios antes de entrar.
Recuerda cuando estés en la silla del dentista pararte unos minutos, respirar profundamente, relajarte y pensar en cosas positivas.
